Lace closure and frontal sizes explained: 2×4, 2×6, 4×4, 5×5, 13×4, 13×6

Lace closure and frontal sizes explained: 2×4, 2×6, 4×4, 5×5, 13×4, 13×6

Short answer: the numbers are the lace size in inches, width × depth. 2×4 and 2×6 are slim strips for a natural middle part and the least maintenance; 4×4 and 5×5 let you move the part; 13×4 and 13×6 are ear-to-ear frontals for a full hairline and off-the-face styles.

Closures: 2×4, 2×6, 4×4, 5×5, 6×6

A closure sits at the crown or front and "closes" the install so no leave-out is needed. The first number is the width across the head, the second how far back it goes. The 2×4 and 2×6 are the East African favourites: a two-inch strip is enough for a deep middle part, it uses very little lace, it lies flat under a glueless cap and it costs less than a square. The 4×4 is the all-rounder: middle or side part. The 5×5 and 6×6 give a longer parting for a scalp-like look on slick styles.

Frontals: 13×4 and 13×6

A frontal is 13 inches wide, ear to ear, and 4 or 6 inches deep. It recreates the whole hairline, so you can wear the hair pulled back, in a high ponytail or with baby hair styled. It needs glue or an elastic band, more skill to install and more upkeep at the hairline; in return it gives the most versatile wig. Malvié frontals come pre-plucked with bleached knots.

HD lace vs transparent Swiss lace

HD lace is thinner and disappears on most skin tones without tinting; it is the standard on Régine units. Transparent Swiss lace is a little sturdier and better for daily glueless wear and for clients who reinstall the same piece many times. Both are available on every Malvié closure and frontal.

Care for lace pieces

Wash the hair, not the lace: hold the piece by the weft, keep conditioner off the knots, and air-dry flat. Never sleep in a frontal with glue for more than two weeks without a break for your own hairline.

Questions clients ask

What does 2×6 closure mean?

A lace closure two inches wide and six inches deep. It gives a deep, natural middle part with very little lace and is the most requested size in Tanzania.

Is a 4×4 or 5×5 closure better?

A 4×4 is enough for a middle or side part on most heads; a 5×5 gives a longer parting for slick styles. Both pair with two to three bundles.

Closure wig or frontal wig for a beginner?

A closure wig. It can be worn glueless with combs and a strap, and there is no hairline to maintain. Move to a frontal when you want ponytails and off-the-face styles.

What is HD lace?

A very thin Swiss lace that melts into the skin without tinting. Malvié uses HD lace on Régine wigs and offers transparent lace for sturdier daily wear.
