Vietnamese hair vs Brazilian, Peruvian and Chinese: what the labels really mean
Short answer: "Brazilian", "Peruvian" and "Malaysian" are marketing names, not origins. Almost no hair is collected in Brazil. What matters is whether the hair is unprocessed (virgin or raw), whether it comes from one donor, and how it was sorted. Vietnamese hair is one of the few origins collected donor by donor, which is why it bleaches to #613 without breaking.
Where hair actually comes from
The world's human-hair supply comes mainly from India (temple hair, mixed donors), China (collected and chemically processed), and Southeast Asia, where Vietnam and Cambodia supply small volumes of thick, straight, single-donor hair. Factories then label the finished product by the texture they imitate: "Brazilian" for a thick body wave, "Peruvian" for a coarser feel, "Malaysian" for a silky drape.
The words that matter
- Virgin: never chemically treated. Cuticles intact, so the hair can be coloured and heat-styled like your own.
- Raw: virgin hair that has not even been steamed; the wave or straightness is exactly how it grew. Malvié sells this as Sauvage and as the Raw single-donor line.
- Single donor: every bundle from one head, so thickness and colour match from root to tip and the hair never tangles from mixed cuticle directions.
- Remy: cuticles kept running the same way. All single-donor hair is Remy; the reverse is not true.

Why Vietnamese hair behaves differently
Vietnamese donors keep long, uncoloured hair for years, and the strand is naturally thick with a closed cuticle. That gives three practical results in the salon: it lifts to blonde in one session without breaking, it holds a steam-set wave through washing, and it returns to its own texture instead of frizzing. Processed hair gets its shine from a silicone coating that washes out in four to six weeks; virgin hair gets it from the cuticle and keeps it.
How to test what you are buying
- Water test: wet a strand; virgin hair stays smooth, coated hair feels slippery then rough.
- Bleach test: a small piece lifted to blonde should stay elastic; processed hair goes gummy.
- Burn test: human hair curls into ash and smells like burnt hair; synthetic blends melt into a bead.
- Root to tip: run your fingers both ways; Remy hair feels smooth downwards and rougher upwards.
